Osieck – June 19, 2024 |
In 1942 the Germans deported the Jews from Osieck to a ghetto in Sobienie Jeziory and from there on 27.09.1942 they were transported to a German extermination camp in Treblinka. A group of 28 Jews went into hiding in Osieck and its vicinity. In spring of 1943 they were captured by German police, executed at the wall of a Catholic cemetery in Osieck and there buried. The unveiling ceremony was attended by: the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, representative of the Chancellery of the President of Poland Jakub Beczek, the mayor of Osieck Karolina Zowczak, a Catholic bishop Mieczyslaw Cislo, a local parish priest, a survivor from the Warsaw Ghetto, teachers and students from a school in Osieck, local authorities and the residents. The ceremony was led by the Foundation's president Zbigniew Niziński. After laying flowers at the memorial and raising prayers, the students made a poignant performance, singing and saying names of the Jewish children found in prewar school registers. The photos with faces of the Jews murdered in Osieck were presented. |
