Warsaw- December 27, 2009

27 December 2009 was the 70th anniversary of the first mass execution of civilians in occupied Warsaw. The Appeal of Casualties took place on the execution site on 27 December Street. Among participants of the ceremony were: the President of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, representatives of Polish Armed Forces, the authorities, several associations and many residents. The Lasting Memory Foundation laid a wreath at the memorial stone.

The execution was a retaliation for killing two German soldiers. The pacification included Wawer and Anin which currently belong to Warsaw. The Nazis hanged an owner of the restaurant in which the soldiers had been killed. 120 men between 16 and 70 years were thrown out of their houses, interrogated and led to the execution site. Some of them were chosen to burry the bodies; one person escaped and several badly injured people managed to survive. 106 men, including 11 Jews, were shot to death.
